Fishing in Istria
Planning to fish in Istria? Croatia's westernmost peninsula is lined with a rugged rocky coast from Umag to Cape Kamenjak, calm coves, and the fertile waters of the Lim channel. You can fish from shore, from piers, and from a boat. Common catches here include gilt-head sea bream, European sea bass, and common octopus.
The rocky stretches around Rovinj and the southern tip of the peninsula are ideal for spinning and bottom fishing, while the inland Mirna and Raša rivers and the Butoniga reservoir are a draw for freshwater fishing. Spring and autumn are usually best.
What permit do you need for Istria?
An official sea fishing license is required by law for recreational sea fishing in Croatia. You choose how long it stays valid (1 day, 3 days, 7 days, or the 150-day seasonal license), fill in your details, and we email you the official PDF license. We save you the paperwork and the back-and-forth with the Croatian authorities. The license is national, so it is valid along the entire coast of the Croatian Adriatic (special local rules apply in protected areas).
